Imago Dei, Abortion, and God’s law-word

Majestic

O Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
You have set your glory above the heavens.
Out of the mouth of babies and infants,
you have established strength because of your foes,
to still the enemy and the avenger.
When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,
what is man that you are mindful of him,
and the son of man that you care for him?
Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings
and crowned him with glory and honor.
You have given him dominion over the works of your hands;
you have put all things under his feet,
all sheep and oxen,
and also the beasts of the field,
the birds of the heavens, and the fish of the sea,
whatever passes along the paths of the seas.
O Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!

Psalm 8

The glory and majesty of God is manifest over all creation. His presence and rule is inescapable. As man was created in the image of God, he is to be an image bearer, walking in obedience to His revealed will and glorifying God in thought, speech, and deed. All of life is to be a living testament to the Sovereign God. As image bearers we must consider carefully how it is we live out our lives in light of His glory and majesty. Do we treat His supreme creation, man, with contempt, especially those who are the smallest and most vulnerable? God forbid we should align ourselves with the very enemies of God, who with the father of lies, glories in wanton destruction of the Imago Dei! Do we give aid and comfort to the enemy by either indifference or participation in the deeds of the wicked? Let it never be!

Daily, little image bearers are being led to slaughter, as sacrifices to Molech, for personal peace and affluence. Little image bearers with tiny fingers and toes, a heart beat, brain waves, and an unmistakable imprint of Almighty God. Cries of “choice, choice” are being echoed down the corridors of humanism, contempt dripping from their hearts. “Choice” was the mantra of the serpent who deceived our first parents into determining good and evil for themselves, resigning their progeny into a sin-rent world with no help save the very Christ so many hold in derision.

The darkness compels the creature to abide in chains, to embrace its circumstance as it speaks to freedom and peace. But there is no freedom and peace in the bounds of sin. Abortion is a sanitized word for legalized murder, obscuring the truth that such who promote, defend, and partake of it are complicit in the systematic destruction of God’s supreme creation in the cause of mere convenience and hatred of the One whose image we bear. As Romans 1:18-23 reiterates, fallen man suppresses the truth in unrighteousness. Such is the cause of those who deny the humanity of the unborn, unleashing a litany of excuses to justify their unbelief and wickedness.

God’s law-word reveals His standard of truth, justice, and righteousness. Man, made in the image of God, has value and dignity, being the pinnacle of God’s creation. The inherent worth of man, as Image-Bearer, is made known in Genesis 9:5-7. Man or beast is held accountable in the death of the innocent. There is no overlooking this matter. In Exodus 21:22, if a baby is born prematurely and is injured or dies from the violence done upon the mother, retribution is required. How much more if the life of the unborn is intentionally snuffed out! The Scriptures are replete with verses speaking to the dignity and humanity of the unborn, made in the Image of God and known personally by the Creator of the Universe. The Sovereign God hates the shedding of innocent blood. Who is more innocent and precious than the unborn child being knitted together in the womb? How can we be so callous as to dehumanize this beautiful child and wage war against God by being complicit in this monstrous evil?

For you formed my inward parts;
you knitted me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
Wonderful are your works;
my soul knows it very well.
My frame was not hidden from you,
when I was being made in secret,
intricately woven in the depths of the earth.
Your eyes saw my unformed substance;
in your book were written, every one of them,
the days that were formed for me,
when as yet there was none of them.

Psalm 139:13-16

This evil is being perpetrated in our nation and across the globe, the blood of the innocent is on the hands of not only those who are party to this wickedness and give approval, but on us who are silent.

God, forgive our indifference and callousness. Awake our hearts and purify us from sin! Let us cry out with all that is in us, with fervor and strength. Let us stand at the gates of hell, pleading with those who enter, offering love, support and the hope that is only found in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Let not our enemies dissuade us from exposing their deeds of darkness. Bring forth the Light and work in us. Let our lives shine before all men that they may see our good works and glorify God. Let us live contra mundem. Glory be to God!

Rescue those who are being taken away to death;
hold back those who are stumbling to the slaughter.
If you say, “Behold, we did not know this,”
does not he who weighs the heart perceive it?
Does not he who keeps watch over your soul know it,
and will he not repay man according to his work?

Proverbs 24:11-12
